The much-anticipated start of the SuperMotocross World Championship at zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina, took an unfortunate turn for one of the series’ top contenders. Third-seeded Malcolm Stewart, who entered the weekend carrying momentum from a strong Pro Motocross campaign, was forced to withdraw following a crash during Friday’s practice session.
Stewart, known for his explosive speed and aggressive racing style, came into the opener as one of the riders to watch. After finishing third overall in the Pro Motocross season, expectations were high that he could challenge for the top step of the podium in this new championship series. Unfortunately, his weekend ended before the gate could even drop.
The Crash During Practice
The incident occurred during practice while Stewart was attempting to set a competitive pace. He initially showed promise, running as high as sixth in the opening qualification session. However, midway through, things went wrong in the infield section of the track.
“On a three-on, I came up a little short and a handlebar caught me just below my stomach area,” Stewart explained during an interview on Race Day Live. “At the same time, I threw my back out.”
The impact left him in significant discomfort. While he attempted to push through, it quickly became clear that his physical condition would not allow him to continue. Despite his effort, Stewart’s qualifying time slipped down the order as the session progressed, ultimately leaving him 16th overall—the final seeded position.
Core Injury Ends His Night Early
Riding at this level demands incredible strength, particularly in the core and lower back. Stewart admitted that the injury made it impossible to handle the bike effectively.
“We tried to do the best we could and I went out there for [qualification], but I can’t hold myself up,” he said candidly. “There is a lot of core that is involved in racing a motorcycle, and I absolutely don’t have any right now in that area. So we will just have to sit this one out, try to rest up, and get ready for St. Louis.”
For fans and fellow riders, it was a disappointing development. Stewart’s flair and competitive spirit often make him a crowd favorite, and his absence left a noticeable gap in the field.
Wild Card Rider Gets a Chance
With Stewart unable to continue, his spot in the evening program was reassigned. Rather than leaving the grid short, organizers confirmed that the Wild Card (Last Chance Qualifier) race would expand to allow an additional rider to advance. This adjustment means seven riders will move forward from the Wild Card into the night show, adding an extra layer of drama for those battling to secure their place.
Looking Ahead to St. Louis
While the setback was significant, Stewart remains optimistic about returning soon. The next round in St. Louis offers him an opportunity to regroup, recover, and reassert himself as a championship contender. His decision to prioritize health over risk demonstrates the maturity of a veteran rider who understands the long season ahead.
The injury may have robbed fans of watching Stewart’s performance at zMax Dragway, but his resilience and determination remain intact. If history is any indicator, Stewart will use this setback as fuel for a stronger comeback.
As the SuperMotocross season continues to unfold, all eyes will be on St. Louis to see if the third seed can bounce back and reclaim his spot among the series’ elite.
