Right-hander makes a quick move within the NL East

In a mid-season roster shakeup, the Atlanta Braves have claimed veteran pitcher Cal Quantrill off waivers from the Miami Marlins. The move, first reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, keeps Quantrill in the National League East but gives him a fresh start with a contending team.

“The Braves have claimed right-hander Cal Quantrill on waivers from the Marlins,” Rosenthal wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on August 21, 2025.

A Tough Year in Miami

Quantrill, 30, was placed on outright waivers by the Marlins earlier this week after a challenging season on the mound. He signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with Miami during the past offseason, hoping to solidify their starting rotation. However, results didn’t go his way.

Over 24 starts in 2025, Quantrill posted a 4-10 record with a 5.50 ERA and a WHIP of 1.386 across 109.1 innings. He tallied 82 strikeouts to 30 walks during that span. Despite flashes of effectiveness, inconsistency and run support issues plagued his time in South Florida.

New Opportunity in Atlanta

For the Braves, the acquisition represents a low-risk depth move as they gear up for a playoff push. Atlanta has battled injuries in their rotation throughout the season, and adding a veteran arm like Quantrill offers flexibility and experience.

While Quantrill isn’t expected to immediately slot into the top of the rotation, he could serve as a spot starter or long reliever. His track record includes stints with the Padres, Guardians, Rockies, and now his fifth MLB team.

From Ontario to the Big Leagues

Born in Port Hope, Ontario, Quantrill is the son of former MLB All-Star reliever Paul Quantrill, known for his years with the Toronto Blue Jays. A Stanford product, Cal was selected eighth overall in the 2016 MLB Draft by the Padres and has now logged seven seasons in the majors.

Although 2025 hasn’t gone as planned, a change of scenery and a competitive environment in Atlanta may help Quantrill rediscover the form that made him a reliable arm in the previous years.
