The New York Knicks face a challenging offseason as they look to improve their roster after being eliminated in the second round of the playoffs. With multiple injuries affecting their performance, getting healthy is crucial for their success. However, a proposed trade by Heavy Sports could bring significant changes, involving Karl-Anthony Towns heading to the Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle and additional assets.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Timberwolves minority owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez proposed financial projections that showed a significant reduction in roster payroll. Majority owner Glen Taylor believed this would jeopardize the franchise’s championship aspirations.
“In a failed bid to assume majority ownership, Timberwolves minority partners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez submitted financial projections indicating a sizable cut in roster payroll, which majority owner Glen Taylor believed would jeopardize the franchise’s ability to compete for a championship,” Wojnarowski reported on April 10. The proposed budget would have reduced the Timberwolves’ payroll to $171 million, just below the projected $172 million luxury tax threshold.
If the Timberwolves aim to lower their budget, trading Towns could be a viable option. Towns is set to earn $49.3 million next season under his four-year, $221.08 million contract, whereas Randle’s salary is $28.9 million. The Knicks have consistently shown interest in the New Jersey native, and trade rumors involving Towns have persisted.
Before the trade deadline, Shams Charania mentioned on “Run It Back FanDuel TV” that the Knicks are “always going to have interest in Karl-Anthony Towns.” This interest could prompt the Knicks to pursue Towns this offseason, especially if the Timberwolves seek to reduce their payroll.
The decision to trade Randle hinges on whether it makes sense for the Knicks. Although Randle has struggled in the postseason, Towns has also faced difficulties in crucial moments. In the 2023-24 playoffs, Towns averaged 19.1 points but was inefficient in several key games. Randle faced similar efficiency issues, averaging 16.6 points and shooting 25.8% from three-point range and 37.4% from the field during the 2022-23 playoffs.
Towns would offer the Knicks a different dynamic alongside superstar Jalen Brunson, demonstrating his ability to play with another center on the floor. However, Towns is regarded as a below-average defender, which could clash with Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau’s defensive-first philosophy. Thibodeau previously coached Towns with the Timberwolves, and the pairing did not yield successful results.
As the Knicks navigate their offseason decisions, they must weigh the potential benefits and drawbacks of trading for Towns, considering both his strengths and past postseason performance.
