It’s quite unusual for a player to make their NHL debut with only a few games remaining in the season. What’s even more uncommon is a player hitting the ice for the first time nearly ten years after being drafted. However, that’s precisely the situation facing a 6-foot-7 Russian goalie who recently joined the Philadelphia Flyers.
Back in 2015, the Flyers selected Ivan Fedotov with the 188th pick in the NHL draft when he was just 18 years old and playing for various teams in Russia. He was seen as a long-term project at the time. Despite helping Russia win a silver medal in the 2022 Winter Olympics, Fedotov faced obstacles joining the Flyers due to Russia’s accusations of him trying to avoid military service. After serving time in a naval outpost, he was prevented from joining the Flyers when the KHL announced his contract with CSKA Moscow. The International Ice Hockey Federation then ruled him in breach of his Flyers contract.
Although the NHL and KHL have not had a formal agreement for two decades, they had an informal understanding about contracts. However, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the NHL severed ties with the Russian league.
Fedotov’s prospects of reaching the NHL seemed dim until CSKA Moscow abruptly terminated his contract, allowing him to join the Flyers. At his first press conference with the team, Fedotov expressed his excitement to finally make it to the NHL and was eager to start playing.
This isn’t just a heartwarming tale; the Flyers may need to rely on Fedotov to reach the postseason and succeed there. In his debut game, he relieved struggling starting goalie Samuel Ersson and made an impressive 19 saves on 21 shots, despite the Flyers losing 4-3 to the Islanders in overtime.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Fedotov reiterated his excitement to be with Philadelphia and expressed his determination to use the game as a stepping stone to build confidence for future performances.
